About Guest Lecture
About guest Lecture Prof. KVS Ranganath began by introducing Chinchonine as a versatile chiral building block for designing and synthesizing surfactants with unique structural and functional properties. He described the step-by-step synthesis routes for various surfactants, paying special attention to the Gemini surfactants a class of surfactants featuring two hydrophilic head groups and two hydrophobic tails connected by a spacer. The lecture emphasized the synergistic effect observed when Gemini surfactants were combined with nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles. This hybrid system not only improved catalytic activity but also enhanced the selectivity of the reactions compared to traditional surfactant catalyst combinations. A major highlight of the talk was the application in the enantio separation of Nephroxine enantiomers. Prof. Ranganath explained how the tailored surfactant NiO system enabled effective chiral recognition, leading to high yields and enantiomeric purity under heterogeneous catalytic conditions. He also noted that the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst facilitates recovery and reusability, making the approach attractive for industrial - scale applications. In closing, Prof. Ranganath stressed that the design of functional surfactants, especially when integrated with catalytic nanomaterials, offers a promising strategy for advancing green and efficient chemical processes, particularly in the field of chiral separations.
