Summary
The Department of Food Technology, Vignan’s University, organized a “Rural Nutrition Awareness Program” at Vejendla village under the National Service Scheme (NSS) with the objective of promoting awareness on balanced nutrition, healthy eating habits, and food safety practices among the rural community. The initiative aimed to bridge the knowledge gap regarding nutritional health and empower villagers with practical information to improve their dietary habits and overall well-being. Faculty members and NSS volunteers actively participated in the event, engaging with schoolchildren, women, and elderly residents through interactive sessions, demonstrations, and discussions. The program commenced with an introductory talk highlighting the importance of nutrition in daily life, emphasizing the role of a balanced diet in maintaining physical and mental health. Students explained how deficiencies in essential nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamins, and proteins can lead to various health disorders and how these can be prevented through the consumption of locally available, affordable, and nutrient-rich foods. Special attention was given to addressing common nutritional challenges faced by rural populations, including anemia among women, undernutrition among children, and lifestyle-related disorders emerging from poor dietary patterns. Volunteers conducted interactive games and visual demonstrations to make the sessions engaging and easy to understand for all age groups. They displayed charts and posters illustrating the food pyramid, healthy meal planning, and the significance of consuming fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
