The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at VFSTR put on a guest lecture called "Biostatistics and its Application in Pharmaceutical Research" on January 3, 2026. The goal was to give students a deep understanding of statistical principles and how they can be used in pharmaceutical and biomedical research. Dr. A. Sai Balaji, a Senior Scientist at the CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) in Hyderabad, gave the lecture. He is a well-known expert in pharmaceutical research and data-driven analysis. The Head of the Department gave an opening speech to welcome the guest speaker and talk about how biostatistics is important in modern pharmaceutical sciences. The speaker was formally introduced, with a focus on his research work, partnerships with businesses, and knowledge of how to use statistical tools in drug discovery and development. Dr. A. Sai Balaji started the lecture by talking about the basic ideas behind biostatistics and how it has changed over time. He talked more about how biostatistics has changed from simple ways to summarise data to more advanced ways of analysing data that help with complicated pharmaceutical research. The lecture emphasised that biostatistics is the foundation of evidence-based research and is essential for confirming scientific hypotheses. The speaker gave a thorough explanation of descriptive and inferential statistics, covering things like measures of central tendency, variability, probability distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. He talked about how these ideas are used in drug research to look at biological variability and make sure that the results of experiments are correctly understood. The importance of good experimental design, randomisation, and reducing bias in research studies was stressed. A large part of the lecture was about how biostatistics is used in both preclinical and clinical research. Dr. Balaji talked about dose-response studies, toxicological evaluations, bioavailability and bioequivalence studies, and how statistical models are used in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis. He also talked about how important it is to figure out the sample size and power analysis when planning statistically strong studies. The lecture went into more detail about how biostatistics is used in clinical trials, including the different stages of clinical development, how to choose endpoints, and how to use statistics to evaluate efficacy and safety. Dr. Balaji talked about what regulatory agencies like CDSCO, USFDA, and EMA expect from pharmaceutical companies. He stressed that good statistical evidence is necessary for regulatory approval and market authorisation of drugs. The speaker also talked about how biostatistics can be used for quality control, stability studies, and post-marketing surveillance. He talked about how trend analysis and statistical process control help keep products safe and of high quality. There was also a discussion about how to combine biostatistics with modern tools like statistical software and data analytics platforms. This gave students a look at how things are done in the industry today. Dr. Balaji made the session more interesting by sharing real-life case studies and examples from his time at CSIR-IICT. These examples showed how mistakes in statistics can lead to wrong conclusions and how using the right statistical methods can help research get good results. He also talked about job prospects in biostatistics, pointing out that there are jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, clinical research organisations, regulatory affairs, and academia. At the end of the lecture, there was an interactive question-and-answer session where students asked questions and got answers about statistical concepts, software applications, and research challenges. Dr. Balaji answered the questions with real-life examples and told the students to work on their analytical and quantitative skills. On January 3, 2026, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Vignan's Foundation for Science, Technology, and Research (VFSTR) successfully hosted a guest lecture on "Biostatistics and its Application in Pharmaceutical Research." Dr. A. Sai Balaji, a Senior Scientist at the CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) in Hyderabad, gave the talk. He is a well-known researcher with a lot of experience in pharmaceutical data analysis and translational research. The main goal of the guest lecture was to stress how important biostatistics is to modern pharmaceutical research and to connect theoretical statistical ideas with how they are used in the real world for drug discovery, development, and regulatory sciences. The goal of the event was to help students learn more about how to make decisions based on data, how to design experiments, and how to interpret statistics in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. The Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences gave a formal welcome to the program. She talked about how important it is for pharmacy students to learn about other fields and introduced the resource person. Dr. A. Sai Balaji started the session by talking about how biostatistics has changed over time and how it is becoming more important in biomedical and pharmaceutical research. He gave practical examples of how statistical tools can help with hypothesis testing, figuring out how big a sample should be, figuring out how much data varies, and understanding experimental results. Real-time examples from ongoing research and case studies from CSIR-IICT significantly improved students' understanding of concepts. The lecture also talked about how biostatistics is used in designing clinical trials, submitting them to the government, and making sure that quality control is done. Dr. Balaji talked about how bad statistical planning can lead to wrong conclusions and problems with the law. He stressed the need for good statistical methods to make sure that patients are safe and that treatments work. Undergraduate, and research students all took part in the session, where they had thoughtful discussions and asked smart questions. The interactive question-and-answer session helped students clear up any questions they had about statistical software, biostatistics career paths, and the use of data analytics in the pharmaceutical industry.
