The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at VFSTR put on a guest lecture called "Biostatistics and its Application in Pharmaceutical Research" on January 3, 2026. The goal was to give students a deep understanding of statistical principles and how they can be used in pharmaceutical and biomedical research. Dr. A. Sai Balaji, a Senior Scientist at the CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) in Hyderabad, gave the lecture. He is a well-known expert in pharmaceutical research and data-driven analysis. The Head of the Department gave an opening speech to welcome the guest speaker and talk about how biostatistics is important in modern pharmaceutical sciences. The speaker was formally introduced, with a focus on his research work, partnerships with businesses, and knowledge of how to use statistical tools in drug discovery and development. Dr. A. Sai Balaji started the lecture by talking about the basic ideas behind biostatistics and how it has changed over time. He talked more about how biostatistics has changed from simple ways to summarise data to more advanced ways of analysing data that help with complicated pharmaceutical research. The lecture emphasised that biostatistics is the foundation of evidence-based research and is essential for confirming scientific hypotheses. The speaker gave a thorough explanation of descriptive and inferential statistics, covering things like measures of central tendency, variability, probability distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. He talked about how these ideas are used in drug research to look at biological variability and make sure that the results of experiments are correctly understood. The importance of good experimental design, randomisation, and reducing bias in research studies was stressed. A large part of the lecture was about how biostatistics is used in both preclinical and clinical research. Dr. Balaji talked about dose-response studies, toxicological evaluations, bioavailability and bioequivalence studies, and how statistical models are used in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis. He also talked about how important it is to figure out the sample size and power analysis when planning statistically strong studies.
