Summary
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at VFSTR put on a guest lecture called preventive Oncology on february4th, 2026. The goal was to give students a deep understanding of cancer, its symptoms and its preventive measures to identify in the early stages. The Head of the Department gave an opening speech to welcome the guest speaker and spoke about the importance of knowing this topic of preventive cancer. The speaker was formally introduced, his research areas, his fellowships and his success rate based on his surgeries. The lecture emphasised that To protect ourselves, we must focus on four main pillars: Lifestyle Choices: Tobacco use remains the single greatest avoidable risk factor, responsible for roughly 22% of cancer deaths. Whether its smoking or chewing, the best time to quit was yesterday; the second best time is today. Diet and Movement: Maintaining a healthy weight and staying active reduces the risk of various cancers, including breast and colon cancer. Aim for a rainbow on your plate fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Protection from Environment: We often forget the sun. Skin cancer is one of the most common types, yet simple habits like wearing sunscreen and seeking shade can drastically lower your risk. Vaccination: Cancers caused by infections, such as HPV (cervical cancer) and Hepatitis B (liver cancer), can be prevented through timely vaccination. The speaker gave a thorough explanation of breast and survical cancers. He emphasised in self-examination, saying that prevention isn't just about stopping cancer before it starts; its about catching it before it spreads. Screening is our early warning system. Early detection doesnt just save lives; it preserves the quality of life. He also mentioned Cancer prevention refers to actions taken to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Avoiding exposure to risk factors. Promoting healthy behaviors. Early detection and screening. Vaccination against cancer-causing infections. Community education and awareness. Pharmacists can guide patients toward appropriate screening schedules. He advised the Role of Pharmacy Graduates in Cancer Prevention, Saying that You have a unique position in healthcare due to accessibility and trust, Patient Counseling, Educate on medication safety and risk factors, Provide smoking cessation and lifestyle counseling, Encourage adherence to vaccination schedule, Community Health Promotion, Conduct awareness camps, Participate in public health campaigns, Provide educational materials. He gave some Warning Signs of Cancer; Unexplained weight loss Persistent cough or hoarseness Non-healing ulcers Abnormal bleeding Lump or swelling Changes in bowel or bladder habits Early diagnosis can significantly improve survival rates. He Concluded by saying On this World Cancer Day, remember that prevention is more powerful than treatment. As pharmacy graduates, you are not only dispensers of medicines but also guardians of public health. By promoting healthy lifestyles, supporting vaccination, encouraging screening, and educating communities, you can help reduce the burden of cancer and save countless lives. Let us commit to becoming leaders in preventive oncology and advocates for healthier communities.
