Frequently Asked Questions
Ph.D. candidates are assessed through several criteria, including academic performance, which reflects their capability to manage complex concepts, research experience, showcasing familiarity with research methodologies, written tests to evaluate subject knowledge, and interviews to gauge motivation and suitability. This comprehensive evaluation aims to identify candidates with strong research potential.
Internal Ph.D. candidates at VFSTR University are those engaged full-time in research or a combination of teaching and research. This includes research scholars, faculty members with teaching and research assignments, candidates with financial support from VFSTR or external grants, and those employed at partner institutions with an MoU with VFSTR.

External Ph.D. candidates will conduct part or all of their research at their parent industry, R&D organization, or employing institution. They are encouraged to address industry-related challenges as their research focus.
The written test plays a crucial role in the Ph.D. admission process, as it serves as a primary tool for assessing the candidate’s academic aptitude, subject knowledge, and research potential. It helps ensure that applicants possess the necessary foundational understanding and analytical skills required for advanced research. The test also provides a standardized evaluation, allowing fair comparison among candidates from diverse academic backgrounds. Strong performance in the written test often complements other selection criteria, such as interviews and prior academic achievements, and can significantly impact the final admission decision.
A first-class qualification ensures Ph.D. candidates have a strong academic foundation, intellectual rigor, and the ability to grasp complex concepts. It demonstrates consistent performance, discipline, and readiness for independent research. This standard upholds the quality of the doctoral program and reflects the institution's commitment to research excellence.
After the interview with research supervisors, provisional selections will be communicated based on their recommendations, along with the name of the assigned Research Supervisor for each candidate, as determined by the school Dean and Head of the Department.
