Cyclone separators
Cyclone separators are used to separate dust, husks, and other light particles from grains during cleaning and processing. By using centrifugal forces, the cyclone efficiently removes impurities such as chaff, dust, and small particles, improving the quality of the grain before further processing. It is commonly applied in flour milling, rice processing, and cereal production to ensure clean, high-quality raw materials. Additionally, cyclone separators help in recovering fine particles from air streams in pneumatic conveying systems, enhancing product yield and maintaining a hygienic environment in food processing facilities.
Rice shellers
Rice shellers are used to remove the husk or outer layer of paddy rice, producing brown rice. This mechanical process is essential in rice milling, as it prepares rice for further polishing or processing. Shellers efficiently separate the hulls without damaging the rice grains, ensuring high yield and quality. They are widely used in rice processing plants to streamline the conversion of paddy into consumable rice products. The use of rice shellers contributes to enhanced productivity, reduced grain breakage, and improved texture and appearance of the final rice product, making them crucial in modern rice milling.
Tray driers
Tray driers are widely used for drying various food products such as fruits, vegetables, spices, and herbs. By circulating hot air over trays loaded with food, they remove moisture efficiently, preserving the food for longer shelf life without compromising nutritional value. Tray driers are ideal for dehydrating sensitive items that require gentle drying, such as fish, meat, or dairy products. They also play a key role in producing dried food ingredients for powders, snacks, and seasonings. With adjustable temperature controls, tray driers ensure uniform drying, maintaining the texture, flavor, and quality of the food products.
vacuum oven
A vacuum oven is used for drying, curing, and dehydrating food products under reduced pressure, allowing lower temperature operation. This method prevents oxidation, preserves sensitive nutrients, and enhances shelf life. Vacuum ovens are essential for processing heat-sensitive ingredients, maintaining product quality, and improving texture. They are also used for moisture content determination and sample preparation in food analysis, ensuring consistent and high-quality results.
Gas Chromatography
Gas Chromatography (GC) is a critical analytical tool used for separating and analyzing volatile compounds. It is widely used for detecting contaminants like pesticides, profiling flavors and aromas, analyzing fatty acid compositions, and monitoring preservatives. GC ensures food safety, quality control, and regulatory compliance by identifying and quantifying volatile substances in food products, making it indispensable for product development and maintaining consistent standards in the industry.
General Facilities
The Department of Food Technology boasts exceptional infrastructure, featuring comprehensive facilities and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, ensuring an optimal environment for research and learning in food science and technology.
Plate and Frame Filter Press
A plate and frame filter press is essential for separating solids from liquids in food samples, such as juice or oil extraction. It allows students and researchers to study filtration efficiency, clarity, and yield, supporting research on product refinement, wastewater treatment, and quality control in food processing.
Rice Sheller
A rice sheller is essential for processing and studying rice grain characteristics. It facilitates research on husk removal efficiency, grain quality, and yield. Students and researchers use it to examine milling processes, assess post-harvest quality, and analyze the effects of processing on nutritional value and texture.
Compound Microscope
Compound microscope is essential for examining food samples at a cellular level. It aids in quality control, contamination analysis, and the study of microbial structures. Students and researchers use it to analyze food composition, investigate spoilage, and enhance understanding of foodborne pathogens and nutritional content.
Soxhlet Extractor
Soxhlet extractor is used for efficient extraction of lipids, flavors, and other soluble compounds from food samples. This apparatus allows researchers to analyze fat content, study ingredient interactions, and evaluate quality control. It plays a crucial role in developing new food products and understanding nutritional profiles.
Labs
The food technology laboratory facilities at Vignan University are designed to provide students with a comprehensive and hands-on learning experience in various aspects of food science and technology. These facilities encompass a range of specialized labs, each equipped with state-of-the-art technology and resources to support both education and research. The department is equipped with laboratories -Food Processing, Food Quality Control, Microbiology, Sensory Evaluation, Food Engineering, Nutrition, Dairy Technology, and Packaging Technology.
