National Pollution Control Day
National Pollution Control Day 2025 was observed on 2nd December with the theme "Sustainable Living for a Greener Future", emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard the environment while commemorating the victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. As part of the observance, the Center for Environmental Pollution and Control, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, SASH, and the University Extension Activity Council, organized a pollution-awareness rally at Narakoduru Junction, Guntur District. Students and faculty members of Vignans Foundation for Science Technology and Research actively participated, marching with informative banners and impactful slogans promoting clean air, safe water, and scientific waste management. The rally drew significant public attention and effectively motivated local residents to adopt environmentally responsible and eco-friendly practices. The event was convened by Dr. M.V.K. Report on Industrial visit to Sangam Dairy
An industrial visit to Sangam Dairy, Guntur, was successfully organized on 21st October 2025 by the Sustainable Eco Warriors/Eco Protectors Club under the CEPC (Centre for Environmental Pollution and Control), in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry. During the visit, students were guided with the various sections of Sangam Dairy, including the Milk Reception Unit, Processing and Packaging Sections, and the Quality Control Laboratory. They observed milk testing, pasteurization, and packaging procedures, along with waste management systems that promote sustainability. The visit offered valuable insight into the practical applications of chemistry and environmental science in the dairy industry and the students gained a clear understanding of how science, technology, and sustainability work together in industrial operations. They learned about environmental protection, pollution control, and waste-to-energy practices, inspiring them to adopt eco-friendly approaches in their future careers and research. The faculty coordinators of Dr. M. V. K. Srivani, Dr. M. S. S. R. Tejaswini and Mr. R. V. Ramana provided valuable guidance and unwavering support, ensuring the smooth organization and success of the industrial visit and making it a truly enriching experience for the students.

Prof. Koya Prabhakara Rao - association with Prof. Susumu Kitagawa (Nobel Laureate, Chemistry 2025)
Prof. Koya Prabhakara Rao (K. P. Rao), Head of the Department of Chemistry at Vignan University has a documented research association with Prof. Susumu Kitagawa of Kyoto University. Their collaboration sits squarely in the field of porous coordination polymers /metal - organic frameworks (MOFs)and related functional coordination materials - the exact research area recognized by the 2025 Nobel Prize for the development of MOFs. The five high impact joint publications between Prof. K. P. Rao and Prof. Kitagawa bridge synthetic design, crystallographic / structural characterization and gas storage, gas separation, applications, tuning porosity, and demonstrating functional uses is precisely the scientific thread rewarded by the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Chemistry-International Seminar at Vignan’s University
The presence of fluorinated compounds in pesticides and grass-proof products will lead to the development of agrochemicals besides gaining the ability to store for a longer period of time, said Anees Tilly, a professor at The Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France. Anees Tilly, a professor at Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France, who was the chief guest at the event, said fluorinated compounds play a major role in many fields such as the pharmaceutical industry, agrochemicals, and materials science. Fluorinated compounds provide effective metabolic properties in medicines. Catalyzed strategies can accelerate the preparation of these compounds and add fluorine groups with specificity. Compared to traditional methods, catalyzed strategies produce much less waste. They are also known as environmentally friendly processing technologies. These strategies will help in the preparation of new chemical compounds, especially in the pharmaceutical industry and material science, where the consumption is increasing day by day. Prof. Srinivasa Rao, Professor, Central University of Hyderabad, who was also the chief guest at the event, said that apart from making aline compounds, there are many more that can be widely used in the fields of chemical, biotechnology, medicine, anti-viral and anti-bacterial compounds.
Aligned structures also play an important role in the construction of natural products. Speaking on the occasion, Delhi University Professor P Venkatesu, who was also the chief guest at the event, said that the use of inic liquids and deep utetic solvents in the pharmaceutical industry is the only way to achieve environmental viability, economic benefits and improved drug quality. "Inic liquids are not harmful to the environment as they have a low wash-off efficiency. They will also help in improving the stability of medicines. Apart from reducing the cost of use of solvents, they are also playing a key role in enhancing the quality of the product. Later, the chief guests were felicitated.
Among the posters displayed as part of the international seminar, the first prize was presented to Rohit Phanindra Bandaru, the second prize was given to Anjitha and the third prize to Bhavya. The event was attended by representatives of various countries, Prof. G. Ramesh from IIT Madras, Prof. M. Madhusudhan of IIT Kharagpur, Vice-Chancellor of Vignan’s University Col. And Prof. P. Prof. A.T. Biju, IISc Bangalore, who was the chief guest at the event, said that organocatalysis is a unique chemical method that can be used in many ways in research and industry. This will play a key role in accelerating various chemical exchanges. The drug synthesis by organocatalysis is rapid and efficient.
It will also help in the development of new types of medicines. Since this method does not require harmful metal catalysts, it is an environmentally friendly method and contributes to the production of high-quality polymers. This approach will facilitate many complex chemical conversions and make organic yogic compounds at a low cost. Nitin T Patil, Professor, IISER, Bhopal, who was the chief guest at the event, said that chemistry is developing innovatively day by day and will be useful in developing medicines related to pharmaceutical preparation, organic chemistry, materials science, cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. It is possible to make pure compounds without environmental harm. It is useful in making chemicals that improve the taste and colour of food. IIT Kanpur Professor S. Chemistry Department National Conference Valedictory
Suryasarathi Bose, professor at the Department of Materials Engineering at IISc Bangalore, said that converting plastic into a creative and making it into high-value goods with the help of upcycling will not only benefit the environment but also contribute to the economy. A three-day national-level conference on "Frontiers in Polymer Science and Technology (NCF PST-2024)" jointly organized by the Department of Chemistry, Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Applied Science and Humanities, Vadlamudi Vignan’s University, Chebrolu mandal, jointly organized by the Department of Science and Technology and Serb India ANRF, concluded on Saturday. Suryasarathi Bose, professor, Department of Materials Engineering, IISc Bengaluru, who was the chief guest at the event, said that plastic recycling and upcycling has the potential to reuse plastic waste to keep nearby areas clean.
The requirement of raw material required for the production of new plastic will also come down. He also said that the process of recycling plastic will also reduce air pollution. With the help of vitrimers, sea water can be converted into drinking water. The technology of filtering toxic metals out of the water and cleaning more water at a lower cost has been suggested. These materials will be environment-friendly in the future and will be crucial for pollution abatement, he said. These materials are useful in many sectors such as vehicles, packaging, electronics, etc. Dr S Radhakrishnan, Scientist-F, DRDO, HEMRL, Pune, who was the other chief guest at the event, said that high energy materials have the ability to release more energy in smaller quantities by qualitatively designing chemical complexities.
The nature of materials can be understood through computer modeling and simulations. Later, the chief guests were felicitated. The students were presented with certificates of appreciation and cash prizes in various poster presentation competitions organized as part of the national level conference. C V Avadhani, a professor at Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Pune, said environmental pollution can be reduced by developing polymers that are easily soluble with bio-energy. A three-day national-level conference on "Frontiers in Polymer Science and Technology (NCF PST-2024)", jointly organised by the Department of Chemistry, Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Applied Science and Humanities, Vadlamudi Vignan’s University, Chebrolu mandal, and Serb India ANRF, was inaugurated on Thursday. Earlier, the chief guests unveiled the proceedings of the conference by conducting a torch light and unveiling the proceedings brochure of the conference. Prof C V Avadhani of Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Pune, who was the chief guest at the event, said that the field of polymer science and technology affects people's lives in many ways. The polymers used in the medical field will help in the development of durable drug delivery systems and the development of improved surgical equipment. Advanced polymers can also be used in the manufacture of solar panels, batteries and sensors. It is possible to provide high capacity equipment at low cost.
Dr Renjith Thomas, associate professor at St. Berchman's College in Kerala, who was also the chief guest at the event, informed the students that polymers are used in many departments such as plastics, rubber, fibres, packaging, medical devices, etc. Biopolymers play a key role as an alternative to plastic pollution. Smart polymers respond to changes in conditions such as temperature, pH and light. These smart polymers are widely used in the medical field, especially in drug delivery systems.
Another chief guest was Dr. K. Sudhakar, Associate Professor, IIT Bhubaneswar. Vijayakrishna said nanopolymers are designed at a smaller molecular level and used to create high-quality objects. It is being used in medical diagnostics, cancer treatment and energy storage technologies. Recycled polymers can contribute to environmental protection. The development of new products based on polymer science will bring progress to the economy. This technology is widely used in areas such as packaging, military, electronics and food material protection. He believes that modern research in polymer science can provide lasting changes to our society that will give a proper direction to industries as well as the environment.

Faculty awarded prestigious SERB SIRE
Dr. Ravi Kumar Kottalanka, a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at School of Applied Science and Humanities, VFSTR (Deemed to be University) Vadlamudi campus, has been awarded the prestigious SERB SIRE (Science and Engineering Research Board – Scheme for International Research Experiences) International Research Fellowship for Six months for the academic year 2023-2024 (SIR/2022/001401). This fellowship (3000USD/month) is a well-deserved recognition of Dr. Ravi Kumar’s exceptional work and research contributions in the field of Polymer chemistry. Through this project, Dr. Ravi Kumar has been collaborated with Prof. Hsuan-Ying Chen in the Department of Medical and Applied Chemistry, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan. Under the leadership of Prof. Hsuan-Ying Chen, Dr. Ravi Kumar, investigated the “catalyst driven ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters to generate biodegradable and biocompatible polymer materials under mild conditions”. His contributions to the field have made significant advancements in the scientific community and brought pride to both his institution and country.

Dr. Bharat kumar Tripuramallu, Associate professor in department of chemistry has been awarded DST-SERB project under TARE scheme (Teachers Associate ship for Research Excellency) project with a budget of 18.30 lakhs. His work in this project will focus on N-Heterocycle-Appended Porphyrins as Unique Multifunctional Linkers for Construction of Mesoporous Frameworks Towards Enhanced CO2 Adsorption and its On-Demand Release to Produce Cyclic Carbonates.

M.Sc. student awarded prestigious TEEP fellowship
Mr. Gamidi Ganesh, an M.Sc. student in Organic Chemistry (2022-2024) at VFSTR, for being awarded the prestigious TEEP fellowship at Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan. His ground breaking research in organometallic chemistry will pave the way for his future Ph.D. under Prof. Hsuan-Ying Chen.
