Summary
The lecture began with an introduction by Dr. T. Pichaiah, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, who welcomed the guest and briefly spoke about Dr. Abdul Azeem’s professional background and contributions to the medical field. Dr. Abdul Azeem then initiated the session by explaining the basic anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract, beginning from the mouth to the anus, covering each part’s structure and physiological role. He also discussed the accessory digestive organs — liver, pancreas, and gallbladder — highlighting their importance in digestion and metabolism. He elaborated on the digestive process, explaining how food is broken down both mechanically and chemically, aided by enzymes such as amylase, pepsin, lipase, and trypsin. The role of bile in fat emulsification and the coordination between organs in digestion, absorption, and waste elimination were discussed in detail. The lecture also covered common gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcers, gastritis, and appendicitis, emphasizing early diagnosis, preventive care, and nutritional balance. Further, Dr. Azeem introduced students to various medical professionals and specialists associated with gastrointestinal health — including gastroenterologists, hepatologists, GI surgeons, radiologists, and nutritionists — explaining their roles in diagnosis and treatment. Throughout the session, Dr. Azeem actively engaged with students by explaining concepts on the board and relating them to real-life medical cases, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and clinical application.

About Guest Lecture
The Department of Biomedical Engineering, VFSTR, organized a guest lecture on “Gastrointestinal Tract – Physiology and Diseases” on 20th September 2025, delivered by Dr. Shaik Abdul Azeem, Medical Officer at VFSTR. The session aimed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the structure, functions, and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Dr. Abdul Azeem shared valuable insights on the digestive process, enzyme activity, nutrient absorption, and common GI disorders, making the topic both educational and engaging. Students gained a clear understanding of how theoretical physiology connects with clinical practice, helping them appreciate the medical and biomedical relevance of digestive system studies. The interactive session encouraged active participation, with students asking questions and engaging with the speaker. Overall, the lecture was informative and inspiring, offering practical medical perspectives that enriched students’ academic knowledge and motivated interest in healthcare and research careers.
