Summary
The value-added course on Basics and Fundamentals in Thermal Analysis with emphasis on enhancing the students understanding of modern chemical research tools and methodologies was successfully conducted with resource person, Mr. Siva Kumar Ganapathy, Business Development Manager, Inkarp Instruments and the course coordinator, Dr. N. Satya Vijaya Kumar. The course sought to bridge the gap between theoretical learning of chemistry concepts and their practical, real-world applications. Key Highlights: 1. Introduction to Thermal Analysis: The session began with an overview of materials chemistry, covering its evolution, significance, and role in our daily life. The importance of materials testing, thermal analysis and its direct impact on the fabrication industry. 2. Fundamentals and Methodologies: Participants were introduced to various thermal analysis techniques including: o ThermoGravimentry o Differential Thermal Analysis o Differential Scanning Calorimetry o Viscosity o Rheology 3. Software Tools and Practical Exposure: The students were given in-sight of the direct parameters measured during thermal analysis and how the modern tools using software can develop derivative parameters, exploring much deeper into the material properties and there by understanding the material’s behavior under various conditions like varied temperature, pressure, load, stress, strain etc. 4. Applications in Modern Research: The course covered how the findings of thermal analysis is used in : o Understanding non-Newtonian fluids like Paints o Dairy products like butter, ghee, cheese etc. o Food and beverage storage and processing like ketchup, mayonnaise etc. o Durability and endurance of light-weight materials for application automobile and aerospace industry o Predicting chemical reactivity and stability under varied temperature, pressure, load, stress, strain etc. 5. Current Trends and Future Outlook: The course explored emerging areas and their dependency on in-situ thermal analysis. Understanding fluid dynamics, flow patterns, continuum mechanics, elastic/viscous/plastic behavior of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids with great real-time characteristics as well as simulated efficiency analysis in the production of polymers, plastics, lubricants, dairy products, paints and many more materials. 6. Interactive Discussions and Case Studies: Real-life case studies were discussed to illustrate the impact of thermal techniques with experimental research, encouraging analytical thinking among participants. Outcome: Participants gained valuable insights into how thermal tools are transforming chemical research and industry practices. Students gained fundamental abilities, real-time knowledge, expert in-sight and analytical approach towards various aspects on material testing from the course, which they can implement in their future academic, research and professional endeavors.

To improve the students’ comprehension of the role of thermal analysis in contemporary materials research and fabrication, a value-added course on Basics and Fundamentals in thermal Analysis was successfully conducted with emphasis on industry requirements and implementation. Engineering students of B. Tech first year (Sec-46) from Chemical, Civil, Electronics and Mechanical domains attended the two-day value-added course. The course provided a comprehensive overview of fundamental concepts of thermal analysis and its importance in materials manufacturing, material fabrication, quality testing etc. Participants gained rudimentary knowledge on various thermal analysis techniques like thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The sessions were delivered by the resource person, Mr. Siva Kumar Ganapathy, Business Development Manager, Inkarp Instruments and the course coordinator, Dr. N. Satya Vijaya Kumar, through a mix of lectures, demonstrations, and interactive discussions. The course concluded with case studies showcasing real-world applications and future directions in the field.
