Summary
An algorithm is not only expected to be correct but also efficient. Measuring exact execution time is not reliable since it depends on hardware and software. Instead, we use asymptotic analysis, which studies how the performance of an algorithm grows as the input size increases. There are three main notations: • Big O gives the worst-case growth. • Omega gives the best-case growth. • Theta gives the average or tight bound. Using these, we classify algorithms into groups such as constant time, logarithmic time, linear time, polynomial time, and exponential time. This helps us compare algorithms and choose the most scalable one. Although asymptotic analysis ignores constants and hardware details, it remains a powerful framework for understanding efficiency. By combining it with real testing, we ensure algorithms are both correct and practical.
