The Department of Civil Engineering is functioning as a core teaching and research facility at present. The department offers academic programmes like B.Tech (civil).The curriculum has been framed by Board of Studies members drawn from International and National level reputed academic, research and industrial organizations. Despite the severe shortage of trained manpower in this emerging field, Vignan's Foundation for Science, Technology & Research (Deemed to be University) is supported by experienced faculty with a rich and varied teaching and research exposure. Many of them have post doctoral research experience from standard Indian Institutions and reputed institutions abroad. The school aims to train students by imparting them latest knowledge in the fields of Civil Engineering and other allied areas.
The B.Tech programmes are twined with management courses to develop not only technocrats but also techno leaders and entrepreneurs. A civil engineer is responsible for planning and designing a project, constructing the project to the required scale, and maintenance of the product. A civil engineer requires not only a high standard of engineering knowledge but also supervisory and administrative skills. The planning part of their work involves site investigation, feasibility studies, creating solutions to complications that may occur and the actual designing of structures. They have to work with the guidelines of the local government authority and get plans approved by the relevant authority. They may prepare cost estimates and set construction schedules. Construction work involves dealing with clients, architects, government officials, contactors and the supervision of work according to standards. Their work also involves the maintenance and repair of the project.
The major specialisations within civil engineering are structural, water resources, environmental, construction, transportation, geo-technical engineering etc. On most projects, civil engineers work in teams or in coordination with many other engineers. They can find work as a supervisor of a construction site or a managerial position or in design, research as well as teaching in government services or private concerns. They can also work as independent consultants.
The school has well defined and exclusive builtup space of about 1800 sq. meters at Aryabhatta Orbit with facilities for carrying out both regular academic as well as research work in various areas of Civil Engineering , housing, modern infrastructure etc.
Besides encouraging students to become proficient in their academic area, the School of Civil Engineering motivates them to participate in various personality enhancing activities. The student association RACE (Royal Association of Civil Engineering) regularly conducts technical, cultural and literary competitions at both intra and inter University level.Professionals from presumed industry and national research laboratories, visit the school to give guest lectures and seminars in the latest developments and industrial practices in Civil Engineering.
